Virtual Specimen Gallery

This gallery contains the long awaited "virtual specimens" from the Foundation Collection. What's a virtual specimen? Well, it's a form of virtual reality photography and produces an interactive image that you can rotate and view from any angle. The ability to change the view creates an impression that an object, such as a mineral specimen, has been transported to your personal computer.

Given "collecting and preparing" virtual specimens is a somewhat involved process, we decided to focus initially on displaying the Collection's "signature" pieces. You may have seen some of these distinctive specimens featured in mineral magazines or brochures, but now with virtual reality you can experience the minerals up close and personal.

Note that virtual specimen files can be rather large as they combine up to 30 separate images. (Full resolution, uncompressed files are over 100 megabytes!) They can also require a fair amount of computing power to render detailed, smoothly rotating views. As a result, we have scaled and trimmed the virtual specimens to be a bit more web friendly. You can select either a "small" or "large" version to match the speed of your Internet connection, the performance of your computer, and your patience. Click on small or large to load the appropriate image, and to rotate the specimen click the left mouse button and drag left or right.

With virtual specimens, we're adding a whole new meaning to the term "rock 'n roll". Hope you enjoy the specimens, and check back often as we gather new images at each Collection Committee meeting.
