THE VALLEY OF THE WULFENITES By Darrel Dodd It is Easter weekend and what a fitting time to head to the Red Cloud Mine and pray for a miracle. The Red Cloud Mine is located in the southwestern part of Arizona in an area of complex faulting that has produced some of the finest Wulfenite, Vanadinite & Mimetite crystals ever found! I call this area THE VALLEY OF THE WULFENITES because of similarities to THE VALLEY OF THE KINGS in Egypt. Both have tremendous buried treasures, are very close to the same latitudes, and both lie in a beautiful desert. The " valley" runs approximately five miles from the Black Rock Mine to the Geronimo Mine on the north. This week end Arizona Mineral & Mining Museum Foundation members were guests of Les Presmyk, our Chairman and one of the mine owners. I think everyone that dug at this site found Wulfenite! This is private property so permission must be obtained before entering the site. This particular desert area has a magnetic power that beckons you to enter, with its strange, desolate and dramatic terrain, from the painted desert look to the rugged vegetation that exists here it's almost like entering a different time zone. With the help of my friend Barry Murphy and the Delorme Topo Program we mapped about a dozen mines in the area, but were only able to visit a few because of time restraints. We all look forward to visiting this great VALLEY of the "KING" Wulfenites again soon.

The 8th Annual Minerals of Arizona Symposium was a success thanks to all who helped. There were 60 people registered plus the speakers. Special thanks to all the speakers, they are the reason the symposiums are so good. Also, thanks to the people who helped: Doug Duffy, Shirley Cote, and Sue Celestian purchased the food and got it ready for the morning and the two breaks; Lavone Archer worked on the abstracts and the packets; George Stevens, Jim McGlasson, Ben Benhan, Lavone Archer, Les Presmyk and Darrel Dodd got all the specimens labeled and priced for the sale; all the members who stayed to help clean up, and anyone else who helped and I missed. Thanks again to you all. Ray Grant
