Some Thoughts on Name Restoration
By Genie Howell and Steve Decker

I thank Genie for bringing up the idea of changing our name back to The Flagg Foundation. The original name was The A.L. Flagg Foundation for the Advancement of Earth Science. It's the name most people use to refer to us, and it reflects more what we are, since our function is split between supporting the museum and supporting our own collections.   I would not call this changing the name but reverting to our old name.  A.L. Flagg is the father of the modern rockhounding family. His attitude toward people and his interest was inspiring to many and has given immeasurable pleasure to many people around the world. It shouldn't be difficult or expensive to change the name back.  Do you think there is support from the members for such a change? I like traditional things, names and so forth, so it seems like a pretty cool Idea to me! I also am tickled to think that it might please Mr. Flagg's family to have his name returned to the masthead of the organization he inspired.  Please join us and Speak your mind at the meeting this March 16th.

Embroidered Logo Apparel
By Steve Decker
I spoke with Marina Tennyson of Best Impressions Embroidery regarding the purchase of embroidered shirts, hats, and other articles with our Logo. She explained a lot to me in a short time, so I hope I got it mostly right. She is a nice lady, and the Ball Park prices she offered as examples seem very reasonable to me. The actual cost would depend on the logo we choose. She has a book with many stock designs we could choose from if we wish. Here is what such items might cost:

OtterBanks Sports Shirt with logo $24
Denim Shirt, Med. Weight $24-$25
Hats $7-$12
T-Shirts $10-$11

Marina's Home based business uses a commercial Embroidery Machine, not a home sewing machine. It has 10 needles and is capable of 10 colors if we want to get creative, but Genie says we should keep it simple.  Several members have suggested we use the Sunrise Saguaro and Mine Car Logo, similar to our Newsletter mast head.  Others have suggested an outline of the State of Arizona with mining paraphernalia. If we go with an original Logo, Marina will have that logo digitized by a company in Mesa, and will pass that cost directly on to us.  The nicest thing is that no minimum order is required, and she will make what ever we want a few at a time, so we would not have to buy the garments until we had orders for them.
Now we need a Logo of our own! Bring your drawings and ideas to the next meeting, and Let's make a decision, or decide to get some members together to look at Marina Tennyson's sample books, and get this show on the road.

Here is a logo Marina Tennyson put together for us from her stock books.  Nice Quality!   It would look better if it said the A.L. Flagg Foundation, don't you think!  It shows the fine work that Marina will do for us, and how sweetly she courts our business.

Wayne Sorensen donated this Stunning Morganite/Quartz/Elbaite/Cleavelandite specimen to our Foundation!  Thank you, Wayne, This is Awesome!  Photo by Harvey Jong.
