Our Museum Needs You Rockhounds!

The Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum needs us!  As our Chairman, Les Presmyk, pointed out at the last meeting, our Foundation was formed to support the Museum, and we should be up at the front of the line when volunteers are needed. The main qualification is to be available on a regular basis (once a month, twice a month, every Saturday, whatever). You can be the most valuable asset of this World Class repository of natural history.  Here are some of the ways you can help:

  • Work at the Front Desk,  and meet the public.  Your smiling face will be the first thing that visitors from all over the United States and the World will see when they enter.  Not a good job for me, but I bet you wouldn't scare them off! Count heads and answer questions.
  • Assist in Museum Gift Shop, bring in some cash to help keep things running smoothly.  Money is the Universal Lubricant.
  • Assemble Teacher's kits, one of the big services we can provide to Arizona's Educators.  You can help some of our most important public servants keep the Rock hounds of tomorrow awake in class.
  • Assemble Treasure Bags,  everybody likes Treasure!
  • Make Jewelry, but you don't get to keep it, except at Family Day. You can do this at home, and the Museum can even supply you with materials!  Your creations will be sold in the gift shop.
  • Help with Outdoor Projects, Make the  Borianna Head Frame look like we are digging under downtown Phoenix.  Maybe we are...isn't there an old China Town hidden down there?
  • Lapidary Shop Support, Doug Duffy can be  a gruff old rock likker sometimes, but he seems to be a pretty good boss.  You will do Cleanup, maintain the equipment, shop steward duty, and the like. You can make stuff while you work on this job, I bet. Training is required, but you are probably already pretty good at it, and Doug is a great teacher.

  • Mineral Hobby Related Demonstrations,  You can think up your own ideas for this one. Ever wanted to Be Your Own Boss?  The Museum does have a demonstration area, where you can do a Conductivity Demo, Microscopic Inspections, Crystal Growing, Lapidary, Jewelry making, Gold panning and Rubbings.  You know how to do a bunch of that stuff!
  • "Wandering" Demonstrators, tell people about Minerals!  At last, meet people who know less than you about this stuff.  They will appreciate your great erudition.

If you think you might enjoy this work, or just want to learn more about it, Contact Susan Celestian at the Museum,
602-255-3795, or 1-800-446-4259 (in state 800 number), from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Flagg memorial Gallery is not always available to interested viewers, without a host to welcome visitors and answer questions. (Susan thinks we ought to just open it up to the public, but I am kind of jealous, I guess, and I would like to keep it as our special place to show off, and so I think that we should keep hold of the key. What do you think?)

Hey, I could even use some help with the Newsletter, some reports for the Shows, maybe train us a new Editor, if you want. Now we must prepare for our
Annual Meeting, January 14, at 7:00 p.m, and the 21st Annual A.L. Flagg Memorial Show and Tailgate Sale, January 15 and 16. Tucson, Quartzite, Rockazona and the other shows we look forward all year are just around the corner. Busy, Busy, Busy.
But please sneak away, and come help out around the Museum. Spend some of your precious time enjoying your fellow Mineral Lovers! I know you are busy, but it ought to be more pleasant than donating blood.
