Letter to Doug Duffy

he'll have to work a couple more years to exhaust that list!!

Doesn't he know more people will sign up?? :-)

Dear Duffy,
On Nov 1, 2002, son Kirk and I started off on an ill-fated adventure breaking all the rules of going for a ride in the desert and spent a long night hung up on a rock in a precarious position near the Oro Belle in the Bradshaw Mountains, wondering if we'd live to admit to anyone our stupidity. We learned later that someone had died at this spot two weeks prior.
In the dark, we spent a long time talking about what really mattered in life.  We had a lot of time to think.  He told me that Art Bloyd had been the   pivotal person in his young life, something he had never shared before.
Art, he said, would give him a project and just leave him alone, trusting him to do a good job. Both boys and I used to volunteer at the Museum in the mid and late 80s before I worked there.  It bothered both of us and a lot of others that there was no acknowledgement of Art when he left the Department.  This award gives us a chance to recognize both you, Doug, and Art for your long time contributions to Arizona rock hounds.
So this has been a long time coming.  Shirley, your #1 fan, nominated you for the Flagg Award a long time ago---we keep those nominations forever.  We thought acknowledging you for your dedication to the field Art loved the most was a better idea.  And since you have mirrored how he motivated and inspired, we hope you agree. I know you have taken that mess that was the shop in the old building and made a showplace in the new building.  I think the analogy is "you turned a sow's ear into a silk purse."  I know Art would be pleased.
Ray and I picked the stone, Susan gave me the name of her trophy man, Jack did the gluing.
Thanks for being a great ambassador for our hobby.

                                  Awards Committee Chair
