Chairman's Letter

Every year in the newsletter for the January meeting, I write my admonition to all members to become more active in the Foundation and at the Museum. The purpose of the Foundation is to advance the earth sciences and the mineral-collecting hobby.
We do that by supporting the Museum and all of the educational activities it provides; including help with Family Day. We also maintain our own collection and gallery to share with visitors and members. We sponsor the Flagg Show to help educate the public about our hobby and we also sponsor the Minerals of Arizona Symposium for the education of interested people. We have a newsletter five times a year to share information and we have other activities.
The Foundation is a nonprofit organization and our purpose is giving not getting. We do have sales for members and field trips for members to collect specimens. These help us raise funds and to attract members, but they are extra curricular and not our main purpose. We need members who want to support the hobby and the Museum. We have had over 100 members each of the past two years and I hope we will again this year. We will continue to have special events and field trips for members, but think about ways that you can be more active in the Foundation or as a volunteer at the Museum.
The Friends of the Museum Foundation is actively seeking funds to build a Copper Corner in the large front room of the Museum. They have applied for a matching grant to start this project. I was disappointed that our Foundation did not donate to this project. I was away and with the grant timing our Board was unable to make a decision. I hope that
in the future we can contribute to the development of the Copper Corner.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the annual meeting, at the Flagg Show, at the Museum, at the Arizona Minerals Symposium, or at all of the above. Best wishes for a great New Year.

Playing the wheel of Fortune was not gambling the way the MSA did it at last year's Flagg Show, since every prize was worth more than the price of play!

The Mesa Community College Geology Club provided many activities and specimens for kids at the Flagg show, including making pet Rocks, home made fossils, and cleaning Evaporite minerals with brine.

Young Dealers knew which products would catch the young customer's eye.
