                     "Ask Mr. Flagg"
By Genie Howell

"Several Years ago a six-year-old boy gave a talk before the Mineralogical Society of Arizona on the occasion of their annual Junior Program. His speech was entitled 'How to Start a Rock Collection'.
In its entirety the contents were: 'First you find a cigar box. Then you put in some cardboard dividers. Then you go pick up some rocks----anywhere. Then you ask Mr. Flagg what they are.'
This simple revelation expresses the faith held not only by children but by all persons who came in contact with Mr. Rockhound. It was a faith not only in his knowledge but in his kindly understanding of people."

"A Tribute to a Great Man," A.L.FLAGG MEMORIAL BULLETIN, Rockhound Record, Mineralogical Society of Arizona, May 1961.
The AMMMF (A Memorial to A.L.Flagg) is much more than a small group of hobbyists having a fiduciary responsibility over collections of pretty rocks donated in beloved memory of A.L.Flagg, a man most of us never met.
There is a core of members who donate a lot of time and other resources, who serve tirelessly on committees or simply do things that need to be done without prompting.
The Foundation is blessed with "new" enthusiastic members who have jumped in and taken a lot of responsibility as some "old timers" have backed off due to health or age.
There is a "backlog" of deserving members nominated for the annual "A.L.Flagg Distinguished Service Award".
There's no other rock show like the Flagg Show---no fees to get in and happy kids (and adults) everywhere.
I would have given anything as a child to have gone to a Flagg Show or had access to a mineral museum. It was pretty lonely in the Valley of Virginia --just me and my worn-out Pough's Field Guide.
Perhaps each of us has had a "Mr. Flagg" in our hobby lives, and this is how we give back.
I want to express my appreciation to all you "Foundationers" for all you do!

Aloha All you lucky desert rock rats!
(This message is from my friend Robby.  I will be staying in the guest house on his Mom's Farm in Kauai while you guys are working at the Flagg Show.  If you want to take him up on his trading offer, send your offer via my email on the back page.    I am leaving Dec. 27th, so you will have to be on the email list to take advantage of this, or you will have to be quick!  -Steve)

I am Robby Smith, happy host of the multi-faceted Decker and crew! Now if you happen to have anything interesting you want to trade, please be sure to load cousin Steve up so that he's dragging on his hand carry! I promise to send something back worth it, Hawaiian rum, photos of Steve wiping out, etc.
Actually this local banded calcite we have here is lots of fun, its nice raw and cuts and polishes pretty good.
Run anything you think might be fun and not over $50/75 by Steve, he knows my general abilities, those yellow/red diamonds he sends are nice, Ha! I really would like to figure opal out some more, I don't want Steve just surfing his vacation time up! Got to keep that boy sanding!
      Surfs up, Rob out
