Volunteer Recognition Banquet
By Harvey Jong
The annual volunteer recognition banquet was held on April 1 and celebrated the 11,035.5 volunteer hours at the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources in 2004. This impressive total represents a 14.4 percent increase over 2003 and is equivalent to nearly six full-time employees.
Six individuals (Karl Baker, Kathy Connell, Charlie Connell, Doug Duffy, Morris Jackson and Sam Nasser) volunteered more than 500 hours last year, while 21 other peo

ple contributed over 100 hours. These 27 volunteers received a Museum tote bag along with a certificate of recognition and a butterfly refrigerator magnet. (The banquet theme involved butterflies.)
The Foundation also provides free memberships to volunteers who contribute 100 hours or more of service in a year.
129 other volunteers along with several community colleges contributed from 1 to 99 hours. All of these volunteers received a certificate and a magnet.
Sue Celestian presented a special award to three volunteers (Shirley Coté, Charlie Connell and Karl Baker) who reached over 7000 total hours. Sue also announced that a plaque with a carved rose will be displayed in the lapidary shop as a special tribute to Emily Cox, a long time shop monitor, who recently passed away.

13th Annual Minerals of AZ Symposium

(Continued from page 4)

told us about significant mineral occurrences within the boundaries of our neighboring state to the north.  Evan Jones told us about the red beryl found in the Wah Wah Mountains, Phil Richardson, the Foundation's Vice Chairman, spoke on "Old Reliable", the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine, and  Joe Marty told us about the Ophir district and the Hidden Treasure Mine.
The Symposium just keeps getting better every year!  I hope to see more new faces at the next one, coming up  March 11, 2006.
