2003 Volunteer Hours
By Ray Grant
There were 9,645 volunteer hours at the Department of Mines and Mineral Resources in 2003. This is the equivalent of having 9 extra employees in the Department. This years leaders were Charlie Connell with 851 hours, Karl Baker with 644 hours, Kathy Connell with 623.5 hours and Ev Dixon with 597 hours. There were 22 others with more than 100 hours.
These 26 people are automatically members of the Foundation. There were an additional 91 volunteers plus several organizations which volunteered from 2 to 100 hours. All of the volunteers were recognized at a banquet on April 2. The Foundation donates the funds for the banquet.

Chairman's Letter
by Ray Grant
Great news! The Foundation has 102 paid members. Since most of these are family memberships, we have a potential of over 200 people involved with the Foundation. We also have 26 volunteer members (people with over 100 volunteer hours in a year at the Museum), and 4 life members.
Not as great is the fact that most of the work of the Foundation is done by just a few people. One hundred thirty cards were sent out about the volunteer workday at the Museum on April 17 and only 8 people showed up. We will try a volunteer day again in the fall and hopefully get more people to come and help. Remember you can go to the Museum and volunteer any day. Over 120 people had a total of 9645 volunteer hours in 2003. The Museum NEEDS these volunteer hours to be able to continue all of its programs.
The Twelfth Annual Minerals of Arizona Symposium was very good this year. There was a great variety of speakers with very interesting topics. We are very fortunate that people are willing to come and make presentations at the symposium. Thanks to all the speakers. Also thanks to Harry Jong, Lavone Archer, and Cynthia Grant for putting together the proceedings and the packets for the attendees. Darrel Dodd and Lavone Archer ran the silent auction. Sue and Stan Celestian made sure that there was plenty to eat and drink.
All of the A.L. Flagg Distinguished Service Award winners were at the symposium - Marc Watson, Ben Benham, Ray Grant, Les Presmyk, Anna Domitrovic, and this year's winner Steve Decker.
Coming this fall, Family Day in October. We will have a workday at the trailer before the sale to sort and price the new material that we have acquired in the past few months. There will be a member's only sale on Friday night, so the few of you who have not paid please send in your dues. We will also try to have a field trip or two, so look for your September newsletter and HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

2005 Australia Trip
By Ray Grant

Ray and Cynthia Grant are planning to lead a mineral collecting trip to Western Australia in June 2005.
We will meet in Perth by June 10, 2005. On June 11 and 12 there will be the Minerals of Australia Symposium in Perth. This will be followed by about a week of field trips for the symposium participants. After that we will organize another week or two of collecting trips for our group.
Everyone will arrange their own flights to Perth and we will share expenses for ground transportation, food and lodging.
We will hold a meeting of all interested persons next fall. If you would like to be contacted in the future about this trip please send an e-mail to us at raycyn@cox.net.
