Beginner's Silversmithing Class to Start Sept. 11, 2003 at the Museum

     Reservations are now being accepted for the Beginner's Silversmithing Class to be taught at the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum beginning Thursday, September 11, 2003. Co-instructors are Gary Rodman and John Winters. The cost for instruction is $50.00 for eight sessions. Each session will last from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Students can also expect to pay an additional $50.00 or more for materials. Students will be instructed in how to use a jeweler's saw, solder, put on ring shanks, and make a bail for pendants. Once students have successfully completed this beginner's class, they can take the Intermediate Class that will offered immediately after this one.

Last issue of our newsletter had to go to press before we had all the facts on Anna Domitrovic.  Therefore, here's a little more insight into the background of our 2003 A.L. Flagg Distinguished Service Award Winner.


ANNA M. DOMITROVIC

Curator Mineralogy
Arizona - Sonora Desert Museum
Tucson, Arizona

     Anna Domitrovic was born and raised in southwestern Pennsylvania, in the midst of the coal mining districts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. She moved to southern Arizona in 1975, shortly after receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Since 1977, she has been employed at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in the Mineralogy Division of the Earth Sciences Department, and has maintained her current position of Curator since 1998.
     Anna's extracurricular activities include exploring ghost towns and historic mining camps in the Southwest U. S., and camping and hiking. She maintains professional membership in the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. She is also a member of the Arizona Geological Society, the New Mexico Geological Society and the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society. She has served in various capacities as an officer and volunteer for these organizations.
     Anna has a very strong interest in mining history. She actively researches historical mining districts and their related mineral deposits in Arizona, and has lectured and published on these topics during her employment with the Desert Museum.

Clubs That Meet at the Museum

The following is a list of the clubs that hold regular meetings at the Museum:

Arizona Leaverite Gem and Mineral Society - meets monthly on the fourth Tuesday at 7:30 PM.
Arizona Prospectors Association - meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 7 PM.
Arizona Treasures Unlimited - meets monthly on the third Monday except when it is a holiday at 7 PM.
Maricopa Lapidary Society - meets monthly on the first Monday at 7 PM.
Mineralogical Society of Arizona - meets monthly on the second Friday of the month except February on the third Friday at 7 PM. (No meetings in July and August .)

All of these groups hold field trips and other activities. More information is available at the Museum.
