Volunteers Donate 11,852 Hours in 2002
By Ray Grant

On Saturday, May 3, 2003, a dinner was held at the Museum to recognize the 2002 volunteers. During 2002 about 100 people volunteered their time at the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum for a total of 11,852 hours. The volunteer time per person ranged from a few hours to 1,775 hours for Doug Duffy. Doug is the all time museum volunteer with over 12,000 hours since 1994.
(See volume 12, no. 1 of this newsletter for a story about Doug's work at the Museum.)
Sue Celestian, Museum Curator, and Doug Sawyer, Department Director, presented the awards after the dinner. Every volunteer received a certificate of appreciation. Awards with different metal levels were given as follows: Aluminum for 100 to 500 hours, Brass for 500 to 1000 hours, Copper for 1000 to 2,500 hours, Silver for 2.500 to 5,000, and Gold for over 5,000 hours. The hours are accumulated from year to year. These awards are a piece of mine track with a small plaque of the appropriate color. Five people have reached the gold level, they are Dane Brown (deceased), Charlie Connell, Shirley Cote, Karl Baker, and Doug Duffy.
As a bonus, a framed photograph  of minerals and scenery taken by Stan Celestian was given to everyone who had over 100 hours this year.
The dinner was paid for by the Foundation, and each 100 hour volunteer is granted Foundation Membership.
Volunteers are always needed at the Museum. See Sue Celestian and become a volunteer and we
