How I Spent My Summer

I hope everyone had a safe and productive summer.  While other parts of the country are taking advantage of the few months of the year they may have to enjoy the great outdoors, I usually spend my summer months working on things around the house that I never seem to get to in the cooler months.

This summer started out with plenty of things I wanted to get done.  There are a number of boxes of minerals that needed to be sorted and readied for sale.  There was work to do on the displays at the museum to get some of our most recent donations out.  We had to get our displays ready and back to the East Coast Show in Springfield, Massachusetts and the Carnegie Show in Pittsburgh.  Some of these projects got done and some did not.  Oh well, there is always the fall.

The first big project was getting all of our displays ready for the Springfield Show.  Although the show took place in August, we

started organizing and packing in June.  Marty Zinn puts on this show and it has grown into the largest and best show east of the Mississippi.  It rivals the Denver Show for size and attendance.  Marty has tried to have themes for the show and the exhibits.  Three years ago he decided to start showcasing individual collections rather than a specific mineral or locality.  He started by bringing his entire collection out and put it on display.  There are 53 cases, 52 of which are about 2/3 the size of a Tucson Show case.  Last year he talked Dave Bunk into displaying his Colorado collection.  For this year, Evan Jones and Paula and I provided the exhibits.  It was quite an experience to organize that many cases, watch Bob Jones drive off with everything, get it set up in Springfield, tear it down four days later, watch Bob Jones drive off with everything, and not have a single bit of damage to any of the specimens.

The Carnegie Show was a lot of fun.  I took only two exhibits back for that show.  Even though I flew, it is fairly easy since the show committee provides all of the case liners.  As I have mentioned in the past, this show is
