(Continued from page 1)
At the March Board meeting I brought up the subject of doing a couple of things with the collection room. As the museum begins to expand its exhibits upstairs, I believe we need to continue to help support those exhibits by loaning specimens out of our collection. This is nothing different from what we have already been doing for most of the time the Foundation has been in existence. The additional opportunity is to consider developing an Arizona Rockhound Hall of Fame centered on a tribute to A.L. Flagg. If this is something we wish to pursue, we will have to do it in the room we already have. There are some donations available that will make this a marvelous addition to the room but it may entail moving some of the mineral cases.
I realize how special this room is to some of our members. There is no doubt it represents one of the finest collections on display in Arizona. However, we also have to consider our mission to promote the earth sciences to the people of Arizona. At this point, I am not sure having this entire collection locked up most of the day is accomplishing this goal. This is not something that is going to happen soon. There is still a lot of work to be done on designing displays and the determination by Sue Celestian and her staff as to what they may need from the Foundation's collection, if anything. I would just like everyone to start thinking about the long-term goals of the Foundation.
